01.28.06 | SlideShowPro 1.2.9b Available

A beta version of 1.2.9 is now available in the user section. I'm labeling this a beta because it targets a sporadic bug in 1.2.8, and I'd like to get some feedback on it before making it completely final. There's also some new stuff in it as well, which you can read about here. Feel free to leave feedback if you give it a run.

01.26.06 | Downgrade available

Because of a sporadic bug in version 1.2.8 involving loadMovie() (one SWF loading a SWF containing SlideShowPro), I've re-posted version 1.2.7. If you are using 1.2.8 without any problems, there's no need to change anything. This bug is limited to a particular usage of the component and doesn't affect the majority of people using the component. An update that fixes this will be available soon (as soon as I have enough test case scenarios to demo against).

As always, thanks for the support.

01.15.06 | SlideShowPro and iPhoto 6

Update: False alarm. Turns out Apple changed a few things in the menu system, but the plugin still works fine. "Share" in iPhoto 5 is now reserved for Apple services (like iWeb), while "Export" is now under the "File" menu. So if you upgrade to iPhoto 6, install the SSP plugin as you normally would, and look for it now under "Export." (Sorry for the confusion. My copy of iLife 06 is on a truck somewhere so I wasn't able to personally verify this).

Just a quick note to any Mac users out there upgrading to the just-released iLife 06. iPhoto 6, which is part of this bundle, breaks compatibility with the SlideShowPro iPhoto plugin. An upgrade is currently in development, and will be released as soon as we can figure out what Apple broke. ;)

Version 1.2.8 of SlideShowPro is available for download in the user section. This is a very small point update that fixes a parameter setting via ActionScript issue. If you aren't experiencing any problems, or using ActionScript to set parameters, not much point in downloading this. But if you are (or intend to) you should. Photographer Jason Miles Kirk is using SlideShowPro to present his portfolio of original photography (click "View Image Collection" in the bottom-right corner). Housed in a simple, beautiful white frame that floats above the stage, SlideShowPro melds perfectly with the site design. The background UI elements are all turned white, allowing the icons, text fields, and photographs to truly stand out. Very beautiful, and a good example of how simpler is often times better.

La Repubblica, a prominent Italian news magazine, is using a heavily customized version of SlideShowPro to present their gallery of photos. The default navigation has been turned off, and is substituted with a simple pair of navigational buttons. A text field also displays an image count, which is generated by tapping into SlideShowPro's event listeners. Nice collection of photos as well.

Happy new year! Here comes another free update for all registered users of SlideShowPro. What's new? Mostly bug fixes and usability improvements, but the most notable change is a new "setStartAlbum()" method. A very popular request over the past few months, this method allows you to set (with ActionScript) which album you want SlideShowPro to display first. There were ways to do this before by adding a "startHere" attribute to your XML file, or by using permalink URLs, but "setStartAlbum()" is the most dynamic of the bunch and the easiest to set up. Simply enter the ID of the album you want, plus an optional image number, like so: my_ssp.loadAlbum("nature",20). SlideShowPro will load the requested album at startup instead of the first album in your XML document. This should come in very handy for people who want to assign an album via FlashVars.

Couple of important notes: using "setStartAlbum()" will override "Show Gallery" if it is set to "Startup" (for you are choosing what album you want to begin with). Conversely, if a permalink URL is used when loading your slide show, then the album / image number value of the permalink overrides "setStartAlbum()" (since it is the user that is now choosing which album / image they want).
