Designer extraordinaire Folkert Gorter, who's work you may have seen around the web, is using a stripped down implementation of SlideShowPro on his Superfamous portfolio site. SlideShowPro is scaled large, with all the navigation / UI options turned off. In their place, Folkert implemented a simple external navigation that allows forward and backward image navigation, plus a custom preloader -- all of which taps into SlideShowPro's event listener data. A beautiful, simple example with lots of stellar design work to look at.

10.23.06 | Coming soon to Director: batch uploads

Hey Director users! Something new (and very cool) coming your way in the next update (version 1.0.8).

The process for uploading imagery has been completely overhauled, streamlined, and is easier than ever to use. Version 1.0.8 sports a new uploading utility written in Flash that allows you to select as many images on your local machine as you want, then upload them in one big batch.

This applies to both new and existing albums. So whether you're creating a new album or adding a bunch of content to an existing one, uploading images will be faster than ever.

Here's what else is cool. Because we're using Flash as our uploading mechanism, upload size limitations are gone. Why? Because Flash treats each image as a unique session, unlike the current uploader (written in PHP) which treats your images as one big file. So as long as each individual image file is smaller than the limit imposed by your web host, you won't have to worry about upload file limits anymore.

Finally, one last feature. A real, honest to God progress bar. Not a fake progress animation or anything like that, but a real-time display of your upload progress. Screenshot below:

Expect to see 1.0.8 hitting the download pipe soon.

10.21.06 | SlideShowPro 1.4.1b2 Available

A second public beta for version 1.4.1 has been released. Small update that fixes a display problem with album titles and descriptions (when in "Thumb and Text" mode of "Album Type"), plus a modification of the MXP file so that you may install/remove the beta without overwriting your existing installation of SlideShowPro.

10.18.06 | SlideShowPro 1.4.1 Public Beta Available

Posted by Todd Dominey at 10:52 PM | Permalink | More of this topic in General News, SlideShowPro for Flash News

This release has so many changes a public beta was the only way to initially release it. What's new you ask? A number of things. 11 new transitions, the ability to scale all your images automatically to the width and height of SlideShowPro (and then cropped to fit), improvements to the Live Preview UI to make customization easier, an automated way to use images instead of thumbnails and text for your album links in the gallery (quite possibly one of the most popular 'hacks' since SlideShowPro was released), plus a few little extra things.

To read all about it, check out the Version History. If you do download the beta and kick the tires, please post feedback in the 1.4.1 public beta thread (in the Troubleshooting section of the SlideShowPro forums).

Like anything beta, this should only be downloaded by those interested in experimenting with some new features. Deploy online at your own risk.

Thanks again to the SlideShowPro community for your continued support.

10.06.06 | True full screen with Flash Player 9 and SlideShowPro

Posted by Todd Dominey at 5:11 PM | Permalink | More of this topic in General News, SlideShowPro for Flash News

In case you didn't know, the latest betas of Flash Player 9 include a new full screen mode. Not the same ol' full screen of maximizing the browser 100% in all directions and then scaling the SWF to the browser chrome, but true full screen, as in the Flash Player taking over the entire monitor window like an operating system application.

I couldn't resist trying this with SlideShowPro, so I gave it a try. If your browser is running Flash Player 9, right click on the movie, and you should see a full screen option. Once in full screen mode, right-click again to go back.

For the Intel Mac users out there, I had to downgrade my copy of the Flash Player to 9,0,18,60 in order to get it working in Safari because it apparently doesn't work in the latest version yet (9,0,20,0).

In case some readers don't have Flash Player 9 or simply can't upgrade, I created a quick movie of how it operates.

There are lots of exciting things that can be done with this (presentations, videos, and...photo galleries of course), so you can expect to see plenty of sites using this down the road.
